FAQ 3 - Water Source
Can you confirm something for me? I have just had our source water tested and
find that the tap water has a pH of 5.7. What can I expect from the Regency Elite as to best figure for alkalinity?
A1: You should be able to get a
higher pH than 7 but how high depends on the minerals present in the source water. With a 5.7 pH source water there will not
be many.
Using power Level 4 with my low pH water still results in acid while level 5
is just around 7pH. Does that seem right and is that the highest I can expect to get?
A2: Use it at level 5 power and run the water on the slower speed.
A certain amount of pressure and flow rate is needed to turn the unit on and to keep it on but a slower flow rate allows more
time for the ionization to happen.
When testing , make sure that all the acid water from the cleaning cycle has been flushed
out ( about a glass of water ) before collecting some in the test tube. Use about 2 drops of the supplied reagent for the
test, not pH paper.
It may be beneficial to use an "acid nuetralyzer" cartridge in the water line prior to the unit to
raise the 5.5 up to 7 before it goes into the unit as we may do with an RO system.
I have a water distiller, however I am concerned about the acidity of the water
and would like to drink alkaline water. Can I run my distilled water through the water ionizer?
A3: There can
be difficulties in using a Water Ionizer following a distiller.
#1 concern is the amount of water that the distiller would
have in the storage tank being enough, 2 or 3 gallons?
#2 is the water pressure and flow rate of the water coming out of
the distiller being enough to turn on the water ionizer unit and to keep it on .
#3 is the lack of minerals in the water
and the fact that it is acidic.
Let’s consider each item of concern.
#1) Most people
prefer to collect about 2 litres or a gallon of water at a time just so it is ready to drink. The water ionizer does have
a specified flow ratio which puts out 30% of the water as acidic and about 70% as alkaline. So that means some of the distilled
water is lost. You may require a larger tank to have an adequate supply of source water.
#2) The water ionizer unit requires
9 psi to turn it on and a steady water flow and pressure to keep the power on. You may have to a pump to increase the pressure
and flow rate.
#3) Science indicates that pure water will not ionize due to the lack of minerals. In some cases it is
important to add an acid neutralizer cartridge which puts a calcite ( calcium ) into the water. This then allows the unit
to operate properly.
So there is the potential of using the 2 units as a set but there could be complications to work
through .
Can we continue to run our water through a reverse osmosis system before it goes
through the water ionizer. Doesn’t RO remove most of the minerals?
A4: This situation is very similar to the previous question about the distiller.
The RO unit will remove all the minerals if it is a good system. Some units do leave some minerals in and apparently it depends
on the membrane, the pressure and the flow speed of the water.
We now have several people using the Regency Elite
water ionizer after an RO system with good results. I believe it is possible because the filter contains some ceramic Tourmaline
beads and also some calcium beads. This may be releasing enough minerals into the water to alkalize it.
In some
cases you may require an Acid Neutralizer Cartridge to help raise the pH of the incoming water.
As in the case of the distiller
you may need a larger tank and a pump for maintaining the flow and pressure.
